Antioch Baptist Church

Antioch Baptist Church was founded in 1866, as First Colored Baptist Church of Shreveport, by seventy-three former slaves who were honorably dismissed from First Baptist Church to establish their own congregation. It was the first Baptist church organized as a place of worship for Black people in the Shreveport area. The name of the church was changed to Antioch Baptist Church in 1871. The current building, designed in the Romanesque Revival style by architect Nathaniel Sykes Allen—Shreveport's first true architect and Louisiana's first Fellow of the American Institute of Architects—was dedicated in 1903. It continues to function as the home of an active congregation. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Morning worship is open to the public and is held each Sunday at 9 a.m.
