Central ARTSTATION

The Italian Renaissance-style building at 801 Crockett Street that is now home to Central ARTSTATION, headquarters of Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC), was built in 1922 as Shreveport Fire Department’s Central Fire Station. Shreveport’s main fire department was housed there until 2004. When the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s original headquarters was destroyed by an arsonist in 2009, the City of Shreveport moved quickly to designate Central Fire Station as SRAC’s new home—Central ARTSTATION. “Art the Dalmation,” an illuminated, nineteen-foot-tall Dalmatian sculpture visible from Crockett Street, alludes to the building’s past.

Visitors to Central ARTSTATION can see the work of local artists displayed in the Artists Gallery and can even spend the night in Kallenberg Artists’ Tower, a fully-equipped apartment located in what was once a hose-drying tower for the city’s fire trucks. Kallenberg Artists’ Tower may be booked via www.airbnb.com. For information on Central ARTSTATION exhibits, call (318) 673-6500.
